Lindy Waters III's Outside Shooting
Looking at the types of 3-point shots Lindy Waters III will bring to the Spurs this upcoming season.
Earlier this week, the San Antonio Spurs signed 6’6” wing Lindy Waters III to a partially guaranteed deal1 for the veteran minimum.
Now that a few days have passed since the initial news of Waters’ signing, I’ve had some time to watch tape on Waters and analyze his stats. I’ll explore the types of 3-point shots Waters has in his shooting arsenal and review what his projected role might be with the Spurs.
The types of 3-point shots Waters III attempts
Let’s start by examining Waters’ shooting table with both the Golden State Warriors (38 games) and Detroit Pistons (14 games) from this past season.
As we see above, 74% of Waters’ shot attempts come from long distance, combining the arc and corners. He wasn’t as efficient from above the break, the corners, and on catch-and-shoot 3s, but he was effective when given wide-open threes, and in the small sample of pull-up 3s he took.
To further analyze the types of threes Waters took last season, I returned to the film room and rewatched every attempt. I then categorized his 3-point shot types. Here are my observations based on the eye test.
Beyond the Paywall: Keep reading to see the different types of 3-point shots Waters took, as well as some film clips of those shots. Finally, I’ll look at Waters’ projected role with San Antonio.
