Before going in-depth on the Oklahoma City Thunder upcoming free agents, let’s first look at their cap sheet.

The Thunder have 5 players entering free agency July 1, but before we break down who those 5 players are, let’s look at 4 other players for whom the Thunder have upcoming decisions to make:

  • Isaiah Joe - The Thunder have until June 29 to exercise Joe’s $2.1 million team option for next season. As Bobby Marks of ESPN wrote, the only reason the Thunder would decline the team option would be to quickly sign him to an extension.

  • Aaron Wiggins - The Thunder also have until June 29 to exercise Wiggins’ $1.9 million team option for next season. Similar to Joe, if the Thunder did decline the option, it would be to extend Wiggins’ contract.

  • Lindy Waters III - The Thunder have until June 29 to exercise Waters’ $2.1 million team option.

  • Jaylin Williams - Williams’ $2 million non-guaranteed contract will guarantee by July 19 if he’s still on the OKC roster. Even though the Thunder will probably look to upgrade their depth with bigs, considering Williams got playoff minutes, I don’t think the Thunder would waive him.

  • Once the trade for Alex Caruso is completed, the expectation is the Thunder will allow his partially guaranteed contract to guarantee after June 29 for $9.8 million, considering he was named to the All-Defensive second team.

The Thunder are going to be able to create a lot of cap space this summer if they want to. Let’s say they exercise the team options for Joe, Wiggins, and guarantee Williams’ contract, the Thunder could still open $35.2 million in cap space. Plus, after using that cap space, they’d also have access to the $8 million room exception.

Now let’s look at Oklahoma City’s free agents.

Gordon Hayward 6’7” - Unrestricted Free Agent

51 games played with Oklahoma City and Charlotte (62% of season), 24.4 minutes

Position - Forward. Hayward played 82% of his minutes at the 4 with OKC and 91% of his minutes at the 3 with Charlotte, per CleaningTheGlass.com.

Free agent status - Hayward will be an unrestricted free agent with a $47.2 million cap hold on the Thunder books with full bird rights.

NBA Experience - Hayward will be 34 when next season begins, with 14 years of NBA experience.

Bismack Biyombo 6’8” - Unrestricted Free Agent

40 games played with OKC and Memphis (49% of season), 19.8 minutes

Position - Center. Biyombo played all of his minutes at the 5 per CleaningTheGlass.com.

Free agent status - Biyombo will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2 million cap hold and non-bird rights on OKC’s cap sheet.

NBA Experience - Biyombo will be 32 next season, with 13 years of NBA experience.

Mike Muscala 6’10” - Unrestricted Free Agent

53 games played with OKC, Detroit, and Washington (65% of season), 11.3 minutes

Position - Big. Muscala played most of his minutes at center with Detroit and Washington, but with OKC, he played a variety of positions, per CleaningTheGlass.com.

Free agent status - Muscala will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2 million cap hold and non-bird rights on the Thunder cap sheet.

NBA Experience - Muscala will be 33 when next season begins, with 11 years of NBA experience.

The Two-Way Free Agents - Olivier Sarr, Keyontae Johnson

The Thunder can tender Sarr a $2.1 million qualifying offer to make him a restricted free agent, and they can tender Johnson a $1.8 million qualifying offer to make him a restricted free agent as well.

Johnson played in 9 games with the Thunder and Sarr played in 15 games with OKC. Both players played less than 10 minutes per game in their limited time on the floor with the Thunder.

Should the Spurs try to sign any of Oklahoma City’s free agents?
