San Antonio Spurs Officially Sign Chris Paul
Sunday afternoon the Spurs officially signed Chris Paul. The Spurs' next move to come is acquiring Harrison Barnes in a 3-team trade.
Sunday afternoon the San Antonio Spurs officially signed former All-Star point guard Chris Paul.
Per club policy, terms of Paul’s contract were not disclosed. The Spurs also didn’t provide the new jersey number Paul will wear.
Throughout his career, Paul has worn jersey number 3, but right now on the Spurs, that is Keldon Johnson’s current number.
I wrote more in-depth on how Paul will fit with the Spurs when the initial report of him choosing San Antonio was announced:
To figure out how the Spurs are operating is the tricky part, because now that they’ve signed Paul, they have to open enough cap space to acquire Harrison Barnes in a 3-team trade with the Kings and the Bulls.
It looks like the Spurs have renounced free agent cap holds on Cedi Osman, Dominick Barlow, Sandro Mamukelashvili, and David Duke Jr. By doing that, they opened $25.7 million in cap space.
Part of that $25.7 million went to Paul, who was reportedly going to sign on an $11 plus million deal. But we won’t know those exact numbers for about 48 hours.
As I’m writing this at 3:20 PM MT, Charles Bassey ($2.5 million) and Julian Champagnie ($3 million) are still on the roster. For the Spurs to open more cap space without other trades, they would have to waive both players, since both players are on non-guaranteed deals until August.
