Spurs to Acquire and Waive Patrick Baldwin Jr.
The San Antonio Spurs will acquire Patrick Baldwin Jr., then waive him.
With just hours left before the NBA trade deadline ends at 2 PM CT Thursday, the San Antonio Spurs are reportedly acquiring forward Patrick Baldwin Jr. and cash considerations, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. According to Mike Finger of the San Antonio Express News, the Spurs will waive Baldwin Jr. after he’s acquired. Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express News added the Spurs are sending a future protected second round pick to the Bucks.
Trade rules state the Spurs have to send something in a trade, so that second round pick is the something, though it’s probably going to be heavily protected and most likely won’t end up conveying to the Bucks.
As of the time I’m writing this (12:00 PM CT), Baldwin Jr. is still technically a member of the Washington Wizards. Wednesday a deal between the Milwaukee Bucks and Wizards was agreed upon to send Khris Middleton and AJ Johnson to Washington, and Kyle Kuzma and Baldwin Jr. to Milwaukee.
The Spurs could be waiting for the deal proposed above to be completed first, then they’ll acquire Baldwin Jr., OR, perhaps the Spurs are now participating as a 3rd team in the initial deal. With the clock ticking for the trade deadline buzzer, we’ll get clarity soon enough.
