Summer League Observations: Spurs blowout Sixers
Observations on David Jones Garcia, Carter Bryant, Riley Minix, and Harrison Ingram during the Spurs' 41-point victory over the 76ers.
The San Antonio Spurs kicked off their Las Vegas Summer League schedule with a 41-point blowout win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday. Top-3 draft picks Dylan Harper (Spurs) and VJ Edgecombe (Sixers) were out due to injuries.
Here were my observations on David Jones Garcia, Carter Bryant, Riley Minix, and Harrison Ingram.
David Jones Garcia
Stat line: 24 points, 9/12 FG, 4/5 3PT, 2/3 FT, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 foul, 4 steals, 2 turnovers, 18 minutes
Jones Garcia continues to put himself in a position to try to earn either a standard NBA roster spot or a two-way spot with the Spurs or another NBA team.
To get his 24 points, he scored in a variety of ways. His teammates drove inside and set him up for spot-up threes, and he made three of them with his smooth left-handed shooting stroke. For his fourth three, he was bringing the ball down the court. The Spurs called for a double-drag screen action near halfcourt, and he used the screens to go to his right. The big was playing drop defense, so DJG calmly went up and drilled the pull-up three. With DJG’s 3-level scoring ability, he also drove inside off pick-and-rolls and got to the rim with layups. On one possession, he patiently dribbled into the paint, had separation, and pulled up for a made paint jumper. Some of DJG’s layups also came off his constant energy and activity level. For a guard, he frequently goes in to crash the offensive glass. He would get a rebound and then quickly get a layup right afterward with the putback.
