Team Needs for Spurs in the Offseason

What positions do the Spurs need to fill heading into the offseason? How can they add players to the roster this offseason?

On the most recent episode of The Spot Up Pod, I outlined two ways the San Antonio Spurs could look at upgrading their roster this offseason.

  • Option 1: Keep the roster intact method - With this route, the Spurs would bring back everyone on a standard NBA contract, draft two players in the first round with their 2025 lottery picks, and have access to the non-tax mid-level exception and bi-annual exception to either sign free agents, or trade for players within the contract ranges of $5.1 million to $14.1 million.

  • Option 2: Make notable free agent signings or trades - With this option, the Spurs would have to trade one or two players with salaries over $9 million to either create cap space to sign someone, or as mentioned in the podcast, trade for a notable player with a hefty salary (Kevin Durant trade rumor addressed in the podcast).

While we don’t know which option the Spurs will choose this offseason, the most likely path is Option 1.

Looking at Option 1, I want to examine the returning players on the roster and take an early look at the depth chart for next season to see where the Spurs need to fill the roster holes this offseason.

Players Under Contract for Next Season

The Spurs will have 12 players under contract next season when you include the two first-round picks, projected to land 8th and 14th. We’ll know the picks once the NBA Draft Lottery occurs on May 12.

Spurs 2025-26 Cap Sheet without free agent cap holds.

If the Spurs have 12 players on the roster, they can add up to three players on standard NBA contracts before next season begins mid-October.

Let’s look at the depth chart for returning players, assuming De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama have fully recovered from their injury situations by opening night.
