It’s Saturday and the San Antonio Spurs don’t have a game, so let’s jump right into another edition of The Off Day. Here are the two topics in this edition:

  • (1) The Grizzlies’ fast paced offense vs the Spurs’ defense Friday

  • (2) An update on Jeremy Sochan’s back injury

(1) The Grizzlies’ fast paced offense vs the Spurs’ defense Friday

During the Spurs’ loss Friday to the Grizzlies, Memphis scored 35 points in the second quarter, 40 in the third quarter, and 38 in the final quarter, on their way to putting up 140 points on the scoreboard.

I wanted to see what was happening last night. Stephon Castle mentioned the Spurs’ transition defense being one of the issues, and Spurs Acting Head Coach Mitch Johnson said the game tilted in Memphis’ favor, since the Spurs started to get up-and-down, something Memphis usually does in games.

I went through all the field goal attempts from the Grizzlies in the second quarter and third quarter, and looked at full possessions (24-second shot clock) where Memphis attempted a shot in half that time (within 12 seconds).

Here were my findings. In the second quarter, Memphis shot 14-of-25 (56% accuracy) from the floor. On possessions within 12 seconds of the shot clock, they shot 9-of-14 (64% accuracy). That means over half of the Grizzlies’ possessions (56%) were attempted within 12 seconds of the shot clock during the quarter.

When looking at the tape for each of the 14 possessions, I’ve outlined the type of action the Grizzlies used for their shot attempts, to help get a better sense of how they attack a defense.
