The Washington Wizards head into free agency with 3 players becoming free agents. However, depending on what decisions are made with player options, team options, and non-guaranteed contracts, the Wizards could have up to 8 players enter free agency.

Let’s begin by looking at the Wizards’ cap sheet.

Tyus Jones and Anthony Gill will enter unrestricted free agency July 1. Jules Bernard can become a restricted free agent, while the Wizards have late June decisions to decide if they’ll exercise Tristan Vukcevic’s $2.4 million team option and whether they’ll guarantee Landry Shamet’s deal for $11 million next season.

The Wizards also have Eugene Omoruyi and Jared Butler on non-guaranteed deals, but they have more time to decide on the contracts of each player.

Now let’s look at the Wizards’ free agents.

Tyus Jones 6’1” - Unrestricted Free Agent

66 games played (80% of season), 29.3 minutes

Offense - 12 points on 10.1 shots, 3.9 3PA, 0.6 free throw attempts (80% FT), 7.3 assists to 1 turnover

How good was Jones at taking care of the ball despite being on a bad team? He ranked in the 95th percentile among point guards in turnover percentage, and the 95th percentile in assist-to-usage ratio among point guards per CleaningTheGlass.com

When shooting the ball, Jones’ go-to shot is the floater range look, where he was efficient this past season. While he’s not a high volume 3-point shooter (3.9 threes per game), Jones was very efficient when putting up distance shots whether above the break, from the corner, wide open triples, and the pull-up three.

Defense - 2.7 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 1.9 deflections, 1.8 contested shots, 0.3 blocks, 0.7 personal fouls

Position - Point guard. Jones played 100% of his minutes at the point this past season per CleaningTheGlass.com

Free agent status - Jones will be an unrestricted free agent July 1. He’ll have a $21 million cap hold on the Wizards’ cap sheet with full bird rights, in the event the Wizards wanted to re-sign him, since they’re projected to be a team over the cap.

Back in February, the Magic, Spurs, Nets, Lakers, and Timberwolves had interest in trading for Jones. While the Wizards didn’t trade him that month, they were reportedly open to re-signing him this summer.

NBA Experience - At 28, Jones has 9 years of NBA experience.

Anthony Gill 6’8” - Unrestricted Free Agent

50 games played (61% of season), 9.3 minutes

Offense - 3.8 points on 3.2 shots, 0.7 free throw attempts (80.6% FT), 0.7 assists to 0.5 turnovers

Defense - 1.9 rebounds, 0.3 steals, 0.2 blocks, 1 personal foul, 0.3 deflections, 2.2 contested shots

Position - Forward. Gill played 47% of his minutes at the 4 and 43% of his minutes at the 3 per CleaningTheGlass.com

Free agent status - Gill will be an unrestricted free agent come July 1, with a $2 million cap hold on the Wizards’ books. The Wizards have full bird rights on Gill in the event they wanted to re-sign him to a salary above the veteran minimum.

NBA Experience - At 31, Gill has 4 years of NBA experience.

The Two-Way Free Agent - Jules Bernard

The Wizards can make Bernard a restricted free agent to return on a two-way contract if they tender him a qualifying offer by June 29.

Should the Spurs try to sign Tyus Jones?
