What will Holland bring to an NBA team?

Rim attacking, Speed with ball, Size

Here’s Holland’s shot chart this season in 14 games with G-League Ignite:

By @PaulGarciaNBA
  • As you can see by his shot selection, Holland wants to get to the basket, evidenced by 68% of his shot attempts being attempted in the paint. Whether creating on his own, using the pick-and-roll, or dribble-hand off action, Holland is crafty on his drives when attacking the rim, whether in the full court, or halfcourt. Holland can use the euro-step to get by defenders. He’s strong in being able to finish layups with some contact from the opponent, and he can slow down in the middle of his drives to finish after the defender loses his momentum on the layup contest. Holland also draws contact on his drives and is able to get to the free throw line. In the open court, Holland can throw down some explosive dunks, especially after a steal that he self-created.

  • Whether in the full court or halfcourt, Holland has good ball speed, which allows him to quickly get to the rim, even if the defender guarding him might seem like he has the driving lane cut off.

  • Listed at 6’8”, Holland has the size to guard multiple positions out on the floor, though he mainly defended 3s in the G-League. He can use his size and physicality to absorb contact on drives, and break through sets on defense to try to create deflections and steals. Though it was a small sample size of just 14 games, Holland averaged 2.5 steals per game in his G-League minutes.

  • Holland has shown some lockdown defensive potential on some possessions, by completely shutting down a player trying to get space against him and then forcing that player to turn over the ball.

What skills will Holland continue to develop?

Shooting, Playmaking

  • While Holland is still developing his accuracy on his jump shot, he’s shown flashes of the pull-up and step-back shots. In the film I watched, he was able to use the pull-up mid-ranger as a shot when defenses went under on P&Rs or to get some separation from his defender, after a quick burst dribble a few feet inside the arc. On one possession, Holland pushed the ball up court, dribbling between his legs and drilled a step-back three.

  • Holland has shown examples of his court vision, like on possessions in the halfcourt where he may catch the ball on the left arc, then throw a 1-handed pass all the way to the weakside right corner. He did this on multiple possessions in the film I watched. 1

  • Though the stats say Holland had the highest usage on his team, in the film I watched, he was more-so attacking as a secondary playmaker if the initial set the offense ran wasn’t going anywhere. I’d like to see how much his playmaking can improve with more opportunity to run P&Rs and DHO actions.

What do other draft experts say about Holland?

  • Kevin O’Connor of the Ringer: Athleticism, Got that dog in him, hustle, on-ball defense

  • Jonathan Givony of ESPN: Impressive intensity, scoring aggressiveness

  • Krysten Peek of Yahoo! Sports: Go-to scorer when team needed a basket, second burst in transition

  • NBA Draft Room: Powerful and explosive athlete

What are Holland’s NBA comps?

  • My comps: Harrison Barnes, Andrew Wiggins

  • Kevin O’Connor of the Ringer: Shades of Harrison Barnes, Theoretical Josh Jackson

  • NBADraftRoom.com: Jaylen Brown, RJ Barret, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
