2025 Scouting Report: Thomas Sorber
Who is Thomas Sorber? What skills will he immediately bring to an NBA team? Who does he play like in the NBA?
On the Spurs Draft Board 4.0 published Sunday, Georgetown big man Thomas Sorber had a mock average of 19.2, but two specific mocks had him going to the Spurs with their 14th first-round pick.
Although the current mocks suggest it might be a bit of a stretch for the San Antonio Spurs to select Sorber with the 14th pick, I wanted to understand who he is as a player and what he could contribute to the team if they drafted him.
Who is Thomas Sorber?
Sorber is a 6’10”, 255 lb center who just completed his freshman season at Georgetown. He is from Trenton, New Jersey, and turned 19 in December. This means that after three seasons in the NBA, he will be 22 when he becomes eligible for a rookie-scale extension.

Three Key Questions
As mentioned in this newsletter, one of the books I’ve been reading and applying to my research and analysis is Basketball Beyond Paper by Dean Oliver.
In one of the chapters, Dean writes about his experience working for an NBA team, and when the time was approaching for the draft, he provided three key questions on the scouting reports for each draft prospect. Based on my observations after watching the film on Sorber, I will also use these questions here.1
(1) What does this player do to get into an NBA game?
On Offense
Rolling and finishing - Sorber plays more like a pick-and-roll type big, with good hands, where he can catch on the short roll with space and quickly head toward the basket. Sorber uses a variety of ways to get to the basket after the catch on the roll, whether that be putting one dribble on the floor and using a long stride or pro hop to get as close as he can to the rim, to finish with dunks, or layups with either hand. When making these rolls and finishes, he’s very controlled with the ball and gets to the closest area of the rim, with a better advantage when a guard, wing, or forward is the last line of defense to the rim. He also knows how to roll out of the dribble hand-off action from up top.
