Lottery Results: Spurs will draft 2nd and 14th in the first round
On Monday, the San Antonio Spurs moved into the top four of the NBA Draft Lottery, securing the 2nd overall pick along with the 14th pick in the first round.
Entering Monday’s NBA Draft Lottery, the San Antonio Spurs went in with the 8th lottery odds, meaning they had just a 6.3% chance of landing the 2nd overall pick. The lottery took place, and the Spurs got lucky and moved into the Top 4, ending up with the 2nd overall pick.
The Spurs became the third team in the last seven years to enter with the 8th pick odds to jump into the Top-4. They join the Memphis Grizzlies, who also moved up to 2nd to draft Ja Morant, and the Charlotte Hornets, who jumped up to 3rd to draft LaMelo Ball.
As for the Spurs’ other first-round pick from the Atlanta Hawks, there was a 96.6% chance that pick would land 14th, and the pick did land 14th. In the last seven years, entering with 14th pick odds has resulted in the 14th pick.
With the Spurs getting lucky and landing the 2nd pick, let’s look at who is projected to be drafted in that range, discuss whether the Spurs should trade the pick, and look at the cap sheet with the 2nd pick having a higher salary than the projected 8th pick.
Prospects from the latest Spurs Draft Board
About a month ago, I updated the Spurs Draft Board following the conclusion of the March Madness tournament.
At that time, 6’6” guard Dylan Harper of Rutgers had the 2nd draft average among all mocks used in the draft board. Behind Harper was his Rutgers teammate Ace Bailey, a 6’10” forward with a 3.3 mock average.
With the Spurs already having De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Devin Vassell on the roster in the backcourt, they’ll have to decide whether to add another guard or go for a position of need—a big wing like Bailey.
That will be a decision the front office has a month to figure out before the NBA Draft in late June. VJ Edgecombe, a 6’5” wing out of Baylor, also had a 3.7 mock average just behind Bailey.
I’ll write my draft prospect scouting reports again; the first one will be on Bailey. I’ll also soon update the Spurs Draft Board with version 3.0.
Should the Spurs trade the pick(s)?
