Spurs Sign Jameer Nelson Jr.
Monday the Spurs signed Jameer Nelson Jr. to a contract. Now we await to see what type of contract Nelson Jr. signed with the Spurs.
According to their team roster page, the San Antonio Spurs signed 6’1” point guard Jameer Nelson Jr. to a contract on Monday, September 23.
It’s unclear at the moment what type of contract Nelson Jr. signed with the Spurs, but here are the two types of deals he could have signed:
Training camp contract - The most likely contract Nelson Jr. signed was a training camp deal, which means he could compete for the Spurs’ open two-way roster spot, or if he’s quickly waived, he’d be eligible to play with the Austin Spurs once the G-League season begins.
Two-way contract - Since the Spurs have a vacant two-way roster spot, they may have signed Nelson Jr. to a two-way contract. This doesn’t look likely because Nelson Jr.’s name would have popped up on the league transaction log.
Who is Nelson Jr.?
Nelson Jr. went undrafted out of TCU in the 2024 NBA Draft, but he got some experience with the Spurs’ organization, since he was on their Summer League team back in July.
In 8 total Summer League games with the Spurs, Nelson Jr. averaged 4.1 points, 0.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 0.6 turnovers in 11.2 minutes per game. He shot 27% from three on 1.9 three point attempts per game.
Recalling the games where I watched Nelson Jr. in Summer League, he wasn’t usually one of the main point guards in the rotation, with Stephon Castle getting early point guard duties, and then former Spur Jamaree Bouyea running the point for the rest of Summer League.
Where does the Spurs’ roster stand now?
With Nelson Jr. on the team, the Spurs’ offseason roster has once again reached the maximum of 21 players.
The Spurs have 15 players on guaranteed standard contracts, two players on two-way contracts, and assuming Nelson Jr. is on a training camp deal, four players on training camp contracts in Brandon Boston Jr., Malachi Flynn, Riley Minix, and Nelson Jr.
As far as the position Nelson Jr. plays - point guard - there’s already multiple players on the team ahead of him in the rotation, with Chris Paul, Tre Jones, Castle (if he runs some point), and Blake Wesley. Plus Flynn can also run point as well.
