Spurs Sign Riley Minix to Two-Way Contract
After entering the preseason on a training camp contract, rookie Riley Minix has earned the Spurs' last two-way contract.
Saturday morning the San Antonio Spurs signed forward Riley Minix to a two-way contract.
Minix originally joined the Spurs in the offseason on a training camp deal, and after he had an impressive training camp and preseason, he earned the team’s final two-way roster spot.
Here’s what Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich said about Minix after a recent preseason game:
“He’s a tough young man. He’s intelligent. He learns, obviously he can shoot the basketball. So he’s been a pleasant surprise. I didn’t know who the heck he was when he came in, but he made me notice.”
In 3 preseason games, Minix came off the bench in fourth quarters and he averaged 7.7 points in 7.8 minutes per game. He quickly showed his ability to knock down NBA 3s, launching 2.3 three attempts per game, and making 57.1% of his triples.
With Minix on a two-way contract, the Spurs now have a full roster of 15 players on standard NBA contracts and 3 players on two-way contracts.
Barring any surprises, this means the last three players on training camp deals - Malachi Flynn, Brandon Boston Jr., and Jamaree Bouyea will all likely be waived before 4 PM CT today.
Saturday by 4 PM CT is the deadline for teams to finalize their regular season roster for the season that begins next week.
Minix will probably spend most of his time in Austin when the G-League season starts, but he could be an option the team looks to off the bench on nights when they are without a forward(s) during the regular season.
Once waived, Boston and Bouyea can be signed to Austin, correct?
